Transition your child to school in NSW effortlessly with these programs and activities

Transitioning from preschool/daycare to school is a big step for children and families. This is a new and exciting time for children, however, can be challenging as they are placed in an unfamiliar environment with unfamiliar faces. School is an integral part of a child’s learning experience where they build on the valuable skills they’ve learnt in preschool as they take on exciting new challenges.

In order for your child to have a seamless transition to school, it is important that you work with your child to prepare them for a positive transition. Many daycare centres in NSW offer transition to school programs where educators work with children to develop positive behaviours.

The OECD report for education distinguishes a range of indicators that support successful transitions. These include:

  • Similar views between early childhood education and daycares on transitioning
  • Shared views on what and how children learn in early childhood education
  • Collaborative practices between preschool and primary school teachers - sharing written information on child development and experiences
  • Collaboration among staff, managers, parents and the community

Transition to school programs and activities for a successful adjustment to daycare in Sydney

  • Be flexible: It is important to understand that every child is different and won’t have the same reaction to managing change. This is why it is beneficial to go at the pace that suits your family and child. Slowly introduce certain elements to your child, aligned with their development.

  • Communication: communication is one of the most important factors in fostering a healthy transition to school. Allow your child to tell you how they feel and what they think about going to school. Communication is not just about talking, it is all about listening and understanding your child and how they feel!

  • A great way to familiarise your child with the ‘idea of school’ is to introduce reading into their daily lifestyle. Children benefit from reading books that are personalised or contain stories that they are interested in. We recommend spending time reading with your child regularly during the weeks before school starts. You should also encourage them to ask questions as they will have to communicate and ask questions during school activities. It is also beneficial to inquire about when your school runs orientation and make time to attend. This will familiarise your child with their surroundings and meet other children who will be starting school at the same time. It will also allow them to have a sneak-peek into routines, expectations and basic rules surrounding the school lifestyle.

  • Positive reinforcement: a great way to ease the tension is to talk to your child about how exciting it is to attend school and all the fun activities they are going to be a part of. Let them know this is a big achievement and you are very proud of them.

  • Collaborate with educators: it is important to establish positive relationships between educators and children. Share as much information as you can with your child’s educators as they will be able to pass this on to their teacher in the ‘transition statement’.

  • Take part in a transition to school program in Sydney, NSW: many schools/daycares offer a transition to school programs where children can become familiar with the school environment and teachers. These sessions will help your child feel more secure and confident in their new environment.

  • Practice routines: ensure you are implementing routines at home as this will help prepare them for daily activities and tasks thrown at them during school.

  • Prepare for change: you must prepare yourself for this big change! It is not only difficult for children but can have a huge impact on you. Give yourself enough time to prepare and ease into the transition.

We recommend getting involved in a transition to school program as this provides support to both children and families as they prepare for school. This will create an easy transition and a healthy attitude toward the transition.
